Matt Winter was initially a teacher and tutor, with experience with working with children with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS). Clare Lawrence is currently a teacher who also has experience working with children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She is also the mother of a child with AS. These two combined their knowledge and wrote Asperger Syndrome: What Teachers Need to Know.
Typically developing children will watch other children and adults and pick up skills by observation alone. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulty learning things this same way. They tend to need to be taught specific skills.
Research has shown that children with autism can greatly benefit from participating in an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) program. In short, ABA teaching or therapy is a scientifically-validated method used to teach skills. Appropriate behaviors are reinforced and inappropriate behaviors are discouraged.
A SEN (Special Educational Needs) teacher and a Designer/Developer combined their skills to develop teaching software for children.
Adele and Quentin Devine are a husband and wife team who took her experience with TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication-handicapped CHildren), ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and his 10 years of experience as a designer, animator and programmer, and created SEN Assist.

“A children’s book that will make your heart smile!” This tag line pretty much summarizes Alison Ainsworth’s book If My Dog Could Talk. This is the wonderful story of a day in the life of a child with autism. We are privileged to walk through her experiences with her service dog by her side.
Rhyming sentences tell the story of Levi, a service dog, and his life with his little companion. Beautiful photographic pictures are set on each page and make this story come alive. Its a wonderful tale and should be read in classrooms, at home, and in libraries as it offers many teachable moments.

Julie Clark is the author of Asperger’s in Pink and the mother of Kristina who is currently in high school. The book is based on Julie’s experience with raising Kristina and Kristina’s comments are heard throughout the book.
It was a pleasure to review the book in an earlier post and then be given the opportunity by Future Horizons to interview Julie. I was excited to see what other “Pink Pearls” Julie would reveal and what additional insight she would provide in raising a child with Asperger’s.
