Earlier in the week I looked at play skills in children less than a year old. Play is critical for a child as it helps the development of many skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, cognitive and language skills, and social and emotional skills. Play helps a child to learn and generalize these new skills and concepts.

Parents always hear how important play is to children–it’s their work. Young babies, toddlers, and children love to
play and they often like to play the same thing over and over again. Parents are their babies first playmates and through play children learn new skills and how to connect socially.

Reading skills are crucial for a child’s success in school. “Of every 100 children who leave first grade as poor readers, 88 will still be poor readers at the end of third grade, limiting their chances of academic and future workforce success.” (NLC Institute for Youth, Education and Families) With the start of the academic year, many children will require extra tutoring or additional tools to supplement their reading lessons at school.

Many children with special needs have problems with friendships. The problems can surround not understanding nonverbal communication, to not being able to identify emotions, to confusion over humor and more. One thing we know for sure is that a life without friendships and human connections is a very lonely life.

As my daughter approached the age of four, I realized that her social skills were not developing as I had hoped. Her home-based program adequately addressed many important skills, but the social ones seemed to be lagging behind. I started to look for solutions.
